Weifang, in Shandong of China is the world’s kite capital, a place that let you go kite-crazy.
One of the festival highlights is the flying kite competitions that take place in late April on Fuyan Mountain, on the beach beside the Bohai Sea or can be in Weifang’s romantically named Municipal Government Square.
The International Kite Competition has attracted more than 100 teams from countries all over the world. For us, we will have the chance to see a dazzling display of thousands of fabulous kites aloft simultaneously and soaring against the blue sky! In fact, the kites are all extraordinary and cutting-edge in a great variety of styles!
The festival opens with a grand parade of participants marching to the sound of firecrackers, drums and gongs. Many traditional artistic performance and firework display are staged during the festival with the whole city decorated with colored streamers and traditional lanterns that provide spectators a fabulous light show after dark; it is just pleasantly indescribable when looking at.
Miss the festival? No worries, the finest kites ever made may be inspected at leisure in Weifang Kite Museum. The museum has a remarkable collection of flying confections collected over the years!
