Himalayas are not known as the abode of the Gods for nothing. Truly there majestic mountains can touch the emotions of the most hardened cynic. Then imagine the surge of emotions that a romantic soul like me would have experienced on entering this mesmerizing land. We were 14 people, mostly youngsters, who had embarked upon a trip involving trekking and camping in Devariyatal in the Uttarakhand Himalayas. As we had hired a tourist guide through a tourist agency we expected a scheduled and pre decided itinerary. However, as luck would have it our tourist guide was quite an adventurous soul.
1. The wish to explore
On the second day of our trip we got into a conversation with our tour guide and the other personnel accompanying us from the tourist agency. As the bonfire burned different hues of red and orange, our tourist guide started narrating the stories he had accumulated during the 2 years he had spent in this profession. His spirit for adventure and the fact that there is very less employment opportunities in this region, motivated him to become a tourist guide. As he told us about his initial difficulties and the different and sometimes quirky people he had guided on camping and trekking trips, he started expressing his dissatisfaction.
According to him many people who came on these trips were seasoned trekkers and campers, but some among them were novices and did not quite expect the hardships. These people were the ones who made the most outlandish demands and created quite a fuss. Then again even the experienced trekkers were never really adventurous beyond a point and wanted to stick to the tried and tested trails. This is what sparked the interest of a young girl in our group to try a track off the beaten path and explore new places in this area.
2. Deciding to explore
As she enthused about the possibilities of such an adventure, the other people in the group also got bitten by the adventure bug. Soon most of the people were urging the tourist guide to take some time out of our schedule and take us on an exploring camping in Devariyatal area. The tourist guide was quite excited about the idea, but a little apprehensive regarding the reaction of his employers. We assured him that we would take up the case with the tourist agency when we returned from the trip and would support him completely.
This boosted his confidence and he decided to take up the challenge. Thankfully all the people in our group were seasoned campers and hence they did not mind any hardships that they would face on this excursion. At the same time, due to the precise instructions given by our tourist agency we all had all the equipment necessary including maps of this region.
3. Finding amazing places
Thus started our venture into the unknown in the Devariyatal region and with excitement in our hearts we set out on the tough journey. As this trail was not traveled even by campers, there was little to guide us on, and our mobile phone GPRS did not work here. However, due to the expertise of our tourist guide we were able to find our way through the wilderness and as a fruit of our labor we found some really excellent places where we could set up camp during the night.
The experience was so thrilling that we completely let go of our earlier schedule and created a schedule as we went along on the trail never travelled before. This helped us find beautiful places which were amazing even in the Himalayas. Needless to say without the expert guidance of our tourist guide we would probably have gotten lost in this area, but thanks to him we found such beauty in this land.
