If you are an active trail runner or want more of a challenge from your normal running routine then taking part in a trail running race or trail running marathon event may be something you may have considered or not aware of but is the challenge you are looking for. Unlike normal marathons and races these off-road trails will take you across rough and unstable terrain with steep inclines making them much more challenging and are a good way to enjoy the scenery too. So if you’re in the UK and want to take part here are some of the Top 3 Trail Running Races you can participate in –
The Trionium Picnic Marathon, Dorking, Surrey
This is considered by many trail runners to be the most gruelling marathon in the United Kingdom; it’s so tough the original name was due to be ‘The Crippler’. The 26.2 miles features a multitude of terrain from dirt paths and grass to rocky trails and stepping stones in a river with a great number of steps too and takes you up and down the equivalent of 6000 feet which is the same as ascending and descending mount Snowdon twice. If you don’t want to go the full way your first time you can do the Trionium Midsummer Munro half marathon instead which takes place on the same day at the same location but both have stunning views of the North Downs and surrounding Dorking that can help take your mind off the tough race.
Eridge Park 10 Trail Challenge, Tunbridge Wells, Kent
This ten mile race has often been cited as a favourite amongst trail runners and has been voted as the number one race in the UK as not only is it across private land making it free from traffic it offers incredible scenery and a tough route to run. The course takes runners through a deer park, ancient woodland, past picturesque lakes, Victorian-era follies and unusual sand caves but that’s if you’re not too distracted by the steep and narrow climbs and surprising amounts of mud you have to get through, but there are tracks, woodland paths and grassy areas as well, this is one you won’t want to miss.
Morecombe Cross Bay Challenge
This Half Marathon race offers something that no other trail running route in the world does by crossing a tidal bay. Morecombe Bay was originally the site of the quickest route between the counties of Cumbria and Lancashire and saw local monks from nearby Abbeys guide travellers across during low tide times safely during the 13th century whereas today it sees the Cross Bay Challenge take place on the same route. The challenging route allows runners to view the amazing scenery around the bay and the South Lakes while running across the sands for a true challenge, or you can enjoy a 7 mile walk if you wish to be a spectator at the finish line.
There are many other trail running marathons, half-marathons and races across the UK you can participate in that offer challenging routes of varying terrain that take you through the most stunning scenery the United Kingdom has to offer but you should ensure if you do take part having premium trail running shoes are a definite must to help protect and support your feet throughout.
