Are you living and traveling on a budget? Well if you are visiting Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, then you have probably come to the right city to suit your needs. Many Pittsburghers are living on a budget themselves. This is a city where a ticket to a baseball game can cost you as low as $10 and a night out on the town can be had for under $30. You can get the big city feel for small town prices if you follow this guide to Pittsburgh.
Great City Views for Free
If you are coming to the city of Pittsburgh from the airport then you’ll have to travel through the Fort Pitt Tunnels. The New York Times has been quoted as saying that Pittsburgh is the “only city with an entrance” – and when you enter through the tunnels, you’ll know exactly what they mean. The view of the city as your cross the Fort Pitt Bridge is breathtaking as you emerge from the tunnel and you are greeted with the city skyline and sparkling rivers.
But for an even better free view of the city, you’ll want to head up to the top of Mt Washington. Some have called this one of the best views in America. The top of the hill overlooks the entire skyline of the city and most pictures of the city skyline are taken from atop My Washington. If you don’t want to drive to the top, you can always pay a couple of dollars and ride one of the historic inclines up to the top.
Walk the City for Free
The city is basically divided into three sections, which are divided by the three rivers – the North Shore, the South Side, and downtown. Because the city is so compact, you can easily walk from the South Side, across a bridge into downtown, and then across another bridge to the North Shore.
The view of all of the many bridges, skyscrapers, and rivers is a beautiful thing all in itself. And if you really don’t feel like walking around downtown, you can ride the city’s subway system – the “T” – for free within the Golden Triangle area. There aren’t many stops, but its a simple and quick way to zip around the downtown area.
As an added bonus – if you do drive into the city, parking is free in the city on Sunday.
Catch a Baseball Game for Cheap
If you love sports, then Pittsburgh is a great city to visit. Your best bet on a budget is to go watch a baseball game at PNC Park. Pittsburgh Pirates tickets can run as low as $10 for a bleacher seat and beer prices at PNC Park are some of the lowest in the nation. The Pirates are also known for having a section of “all you can eat” seats. For one moderate price, you can eat and drink (soft drinks) all that you want throughout the game. The park is also known for being one of the most beautiful in all of baseball, with great views of the city skyline.
Additional Free Sightseeing
For more great sightseeing on the cheap, head over to the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, which is the home to the University of Pitt. You can take a free self-guided tour of the Nationality Rooms inside the Cathedral of Learning and then head over to Schenley Park to hike around – all with great view of the city in the distance.
While still on the Pitt campus you can check out the ruins from old Forbes Field. Some portions of the old stadium can still be found, including part of the left field wall, the old flag pole, and the sport where home plate was once located.
In addition to Forbes Field, be sure to also check out the University Art Gallery. The gallery is located on the first floor of the Frick Fine Arts Building and there is no admission to check it out.
Inexpensive Food and Drinks
For the most part, all bars and restaurants in Pittsburgh are reasonably priced. If you are in Pittsburgh for the first time, then you have to eat the sandwich for which Pittsburgh is known for – the Primanti Brothers sandwich. This monster is loaded with your choice of meat, cheese, french fries, and coleslaw. It’s an entire meal piled between two slices of bread – all for right around five bucks.
Besides eating at Primantis, your best bet for finding something cheap would be to check out the South Side. Carson Street is lined with bars, restaurants, and cafes for nearly 30 blocks. You are sure to find something to fit your tastes and budget. If you are looking for the best cheap drinks, check out Jack’s. For giant sandwiches with a great craft beer list, stop over at Fat Heads. If an English pub is your thing, Piper’s Pub has great brunch on Sunday mornings. That’s just a small slice of what can be found on the South Side.
