Berlin is emerging as one of the most popular and trendy cities to visit in Europe. Since the fall of the Berlin wall 23 years ago, it seems the capital of Germany is unstoppable; constantly developing, innovating and growing.
As one of Western Europe’s most affordable and coolest cities, which is at the height of fashion, art, design, architecture and nightlife, it’s no surprise it’s a top destination choice for Berlin stag parties. However, there are five reasons which bring to light the reasons behind the cities growing popularity;
History
It’s important to begin with history since this is what has made Berlin what it is today, as of course is true with many cities however, Berlin still wears its history on its sleeve. Stepping foot in the city, it’s immediately apparent that it’s had its fair share of suffering which can be seen in the derelict buildings yet to be renovated and the memorials and monuments found around the city which tell the story of its tumultuous past.
For some of the most captivating and moving historical areas and monuments, check out Brandenburg Gate, the Jewish Memorial and the East Side Gallery.
Art
The artistic flair of Berlin is as prevalent as its historical counterpart, each juxtaposed in perfect unity. The combination of old and new is portrayed in the graffiti which covers the remains of the Berlin Wall whilst Nazi bunkers and historical buildings have been renovated into art galleries.
Germany’s capital confidently yet innovatively reflects a liberal and creative attitude which is contributed to by, as well as attracts, many artists and creative types from all over the world looking for a creative space in which to thrive.
The diverse art scene is reflected in the 700 or more art galleries in the city and 6,000 artists that reside there and with all the ingredients for a cultural capital, it’s an exciting time for art in Berlin. Make sure you check out Carlier Gabauer, Berlinishne Galerie and C/O Berlin to name a few galleries.
Music and Nightlife
Known by some as the capital of electronic music, Berlin also offers a magnificently eclectic choice of clubs to seek out and dance the night away in. Underground clubs, to modern and airy clubs keep the choice inspiring and a lot more diverse to what other capital cities have to offer.
Contributing to this, the city’s liberal nightlife also attracts top DJ’s from all over the world. Berliners have such a passion for partying that there is no such thing as a closing time and it’s not unusual for clubs to go from Friday night until Monday morning; perfect for your stag do celebrations!
Mitte, the former city centre of East Berlin is a great area to start and it’s where you’ll find some of the top clubs in Berlin.
Culture
As a cosmopolitan city, every corner of Berlin offers something new for the eyes and mind to feast on. Home to over 153 museums and with Museum Island being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Berlin is ideal for the culture vultures of you.
Outdoor film screenings, swimming pools and green spaces offer the opportunity to make the most out of the city’s outdoor spaces during the very warm temperatures of the summer months, whilst cosy cafes, bars, art house cinemas, over 50 theatres and very decent multicultural restaurants provide warmth in the cold days and nights of winter.
Festivals are a big thing in Berlin too, most notably for those of you visiting on a stag party; Fete de la Musique is worth timing your visit alongside. Taking place every June, the festival puts on bands and DJ gigs all across the city and there’s no set genre so it’s a great one if you’re in a group as there will be something for everyone.
Outdoor Spaces
Undoubtedly the best time to visit Berlin is in the summer, where you can make the most out of one of Germany’s greenest cities.
As well as the parks, woods and green spaces, the city has created many very enjoyable outdoor spaces including manmade sandy beach bars along the shores of the river Spree which runs through the city centre. Palm trees, swimming pools and deck chairs line the river right in the heart of the busy city and make for a completely unique and perfect way to relax on summer days and nights.
Markets are popular in Berlin from flea markets where you can pick up anything from an old record player to food markets where you can enjoy a locally brewed beer and of course, in the winter there are plenty of Christmas markets to soak up the atmosphere.
