The world is a hugely diverse place, there’s no denying that, and everywhere is a blank canvas for adventure, for once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and for exploring the unknown. But, it has to be said, that there are a handful of countries that offer just that little bit more in terms of adventure; whether it’s the unbelievable backdrop that frames every moment or the wild activities that are on offer to gain a different (and adrenalin-fuelled) perspective.
It’s not unusual in the slightest for Costa Rica to appear on a list like this. In fact it is very, very common. The diverse combination of dense rainforests, sprawling beaches, and colourful villages make it the perfect place for travellers seeking a bit of adventure. The Celeste River Waterfall that is hidden in the Tenorio Volcano National Park sees vast numbers of visitors bathing in its breathtakingly blue lagoon and frolicking beneath the plummeting water. Surrounding this, there is almost 13,000 hectares of lush rainforest which, like many other natural hotspots around the country, offer a range of adventurous activities.
If there is one country that has it all, it’s South Africa; there’s safari opportunities, the Big Five, stunning beaches, bustling cities, wine routes, mountains and, of course, the chance for adventure. Here, there is an activity that will get your adrenalin pumping every day of the week; explorers can climb, hike, and bike; water-lovers can dive, river raft, and swim; animal lovers can safari, pet lions, and horse ride; and the down-right adventurous can bungee jump, skydive, and shark cage dive – an activity that draws in thousands of daring tourists each year.
With such a diverse terrain and landscape, it’s no wonder that New Zealand makes an appearance on this list. From glaciers to lakes and soaring countryside, there is a backdrop to suit every traveller’s adventurous needs. Plus, it helps that Lord of the Rings was filmed here, right? Wild travel experiences taking place here include cycling trails, underwater escapades, mountain biking, trekking and, of course, skydiving and bungee jumping.
Tours to the Machu Picchu ruins have propelled Peru into the top adventurous countries in the world, but it is not only this ancient site that draws in brave travellers every year. In fact, there are many more adrenalin-pumping activities for you to get to grips with in this beautiful South American country; try cycling one of the many trails taking you through rough terrain and beautiful countryside, trekking (Machu Picchu and other routes), climbing, and camping in the valley of the Peruvian Andes Mountains which is a notorious hub for adventure-seekers.
The Galapagos Islands couldn’t really escape their adventurous fate after Charles Darwin conceived his theory of evolution here; that’s pretty cool, right? In particular though, this natural hotspot is famous for its abundance of rich wildlife which flourishes in it equatorial location. Adventurous types who might find themselves marooned here can try snorkelling amongst the spectacular marine life, kayaking, wildlife watching, biking, horse riding, scuba diving, and camping out amidst the natural wonder and beauty of the islands.
