Castelmezzano is a panoramic place situated at the foot of the rocky, mountainous area of Dolomiti Lucane. History of Castelmezzano dates back approximately between 6th and 5th centuries BC when a Magno-Greek population inhibited the coastal area after finding the town called Maudoro. Later, in the tenth century Saracen tried to invade the place that forced people to look for a new place. During the migration, one of the shepherds called Pauline found a suitable place in the steep cliffs to attack the invaders by rolling boulders. Castelmezzano has passed through many hands of landlords, to name a few are Garlon d’Alife, the Suardo, the De Leonardis, and the De Lerma.
