There is nothing at the end of the earth like the end of the earth. What on earth am I saying? Come to the end of the North American Continent, that little island we call Key West, Florida.
My favorite part of the Key’s is the drive through those incredible waters, just tip-toeing across the sea like an old salt. Truly the Mermaid’s bath for these colors truly defy description. After a peaceful venture through the islands arriving at the end is just a beginning. Where to go first? Is there a restaurant I haven’t seen yet, any nook or cranny of the Southard side that is changed? And then to Fort Zachary Taylor, to see the good people who frequent the sea each day, through the gates of this former Civil War Fort.
Something happens to a person when they begin to understand the history of the island emerging down a path in the form of a Civil War fort, complete with masonry that defies explanation and ghostly whispers that encourage a Halloween Walk.
Where is my friend with his dog, you know the one that wears the goggles in the back of the VW bug… or Charley on his bike, around the island for another trip.
As the sailing ships leave the port for sunset cruises I watch the sun sing red fire sizzling into the water. It takes forever and sunset is the event of the island. Witness the festivities down at the Historic south dock with its songstresses and stilt walkers, the daredevils and street performers. Key Westers’ are a hearty bunch grown out of old necessity into an unusual and wonderful people with talent and ability that come from generations of living year after year on the rock. And they are VERY entertaining. Whoops – watch out for chickens… well now and there is that crawl down duval street too!
It does no good to have a car, so rent a motorbike. Feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your skin. Look for treasure and believe in spirits. Oh and there is so much more! Find the music that wafts all through the place, the art that shines from galleries, the poetry of it all. Enjoy the Florida Keys, and please, don’t die before you get there. This really could be heaven on earth.
