Kos holidays are perfect for those who want to get away and enjoy a peaceful and relaxed holiday. Kos holidays offer an enchanting mixture of stunning beaches and interesting ancient history, as well as an abundance of bars and restaurants that provide lively evening entertainment.
Here are five places to visit while on your Kos holiday:
A good start to any holiday is a relaxing trip to the hot springs. This can be found at Therma, a hot springs located approximately 8km from the capital. Take advantage of its perceived healing powers and then cool off in the crystal clear waters.
A very well-known Greek famous figure is Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine. Visit the site of the Hippocrates tree; this tree has a trunk almost 40 foot in circumference. This tree stands right near the harbour in front of knight’s castle. It is one of the town’s most famous sites. If what is thought to be true, that Hippocrates actually planted this tree himself then that makes it the oldest standing tree in Europe!
The Castle of the Knights of St John is highly recommended for any visit to Kos; the remains have been there since the Venetian period and were built by the knights of St John as a hospital. An earthquake destroyed most of the castle in 1495 but it was rebuilt 100 years later as a fortress to withstand Ottoman raids. This monument has been well preserved and features the original medieval defence architecture, which includes a moat.
Take a wander down to the roman ruins, a large area, which holds various states of preservation including temples of Aphrodite, Hercules and Dionysus. Here you will find a preserved theatre, pool and gym. To visit the ruins is free and worth visiting if you fancy a stroll back in time.
Also worth visiting on your Kos holidays is the archaeological museum in Kos Town, here you will find a vast collection of statues, mosaics and ceramics found on many sites across the island. You will find a great representation of the ancient gods here so it’s definitely worth a visit.
Holidays to Kos offer something for everyone; culture lovers will enjoy the ancient history and enjoy taking part in the variety of tours that are on offer, and however people who just want to relax can find happiness on a long sandy beach.
