Guernsey is a great choice for families looking for a holiday only a short flight or ferry crossing from the mainland UK. The island is full of activities that both you and your children can enjoy together, making for unique family holiday experience. There are many family friendly hotels in Guernsey so finding somewhere suitable to stay is not a problem, equally all the restaurants on the island cater well for children.
Today I am going to go through 5 of my favorite things to do on a family holiday in Guernsey, from a day at the beach to visiting the islands aquarium or the fantastic Sausmarez Manor – there is something to keep everyone happy.
Day at the Beach
Who doesn’t love a day at the beach on a lovely summers day? Guernsey boasts a wide range of beaches for beach holidays meaning none are ever over crowded, a nice change from many of the mainland UK beach resorts. Grab some beach towels, a windbreak, bucket and spade and head on down. The kids can explore the rock pools while you get some time to relax. This also gives you an opportunity to build a classic Guernsey sea defence, this when the whole family try and build a wall out of sand, rocks and whatever else you can find, to protect your patch from the incoming tide. Needless to say the tide always wins but it is great fun!
What is more fun at a young age than pretending you are king of a real castle? Not much. The beauty of Castle Cornet is that once you are in you are free to roam around at your leisure, you can take in the history and visit the museums while your children battle to save the castle from the invading enemy. Don’t worry there isn’t a real enemy!
Oatlands Village is located in the north of the island and stands as a reminder of a thriving brick making industry that once existed in Guernsey. The attraction has several shops including a chocolatier and a arts and crafts shop. However it is the activities available to children that make this place worth a visit. Indoors there is a Jungle House Soft play area and outdoors you will find trampolines, a race track and a newly built mini golf course.
Bluebell woods is a wonderful place to take a walk on the island, walking through the woods in springtime is like being in a far away mystical land. There is so much to look at and discover in Bluebell Woods and your children will feel like they are on a mystical adventure. A great wind down location that everyone can enjoy.
The Guernsey Aquarium is fun for all the family and has been housed in La Vallette tunnel for 31 years. There are over 24 displays that range from local sea fish to tropical marine fish and European fresh water fish. The fish are fed 2-3 times a day so you are likely to catch a feeding session during your visit. All in all Guernsey makes for great family activity holidays that everyone can enjoy.
